We Are Here To Enjoy Life

I have always been a morning person, although not the kind that functions properly or wants conversation prior to a slow steady process of welcoming in the day. In truth, my love of the morning often turned into another’s (and my own) annoyance when my peaceful desire to be left alone would be interrupted by another’s idea of how my day should start.

As a child, I really didn’t have a choice. School was a necessity after all. But it’s in the small, sometimes overlooked details that truly honoured my desire to slowly welcome my day that through now wiser eyes can see with so much more clarity. These wiser eyes sitting in quiet contemplation, sipping a hot cup of coffee, watching the cat play, and enjoying the quietness of a now empty home. A new stage of life as the children have grown and ventured off into lives of their own.

Reflecting back to my earlier days I smile with all the acts of love my own mother offered to a love of morning but let me transition at my own pace daughter. Toothpaste already placed upon my toothbrush waiting for me in the bathroom. A warm facecloth to wash away the sleep and provide an instant touch of comfort upon my skin. Breakfast set out upon the table with a cereal box that I could hide behind if I choose (a character trait that my eldest daughter also inherited), and a lunch packed and ready to grab on my way out the door to catch the school bus.

So many acts of kindness and love that quite honestly didn’t receive the appreciation at the time, but is felt deeply in the heart and upon the smile over my face now in this moment of reflection. A reminder to me of how often we forget the little moments of life that truly do create significant and long-lasting effects on the heart.

As a mother of three daughters, I too spent many years doing what I could as a parent to remind my children daily of the love in my heart. Sometimes though, I feel that spoken words of “I love you” and a warm hug may have had a far greater effect than laundry that was washed, dried, folded, and placed lovingly on the bed to be put away by its owner.

Reflection and morning stillness have a sweet ability to allow for so many memories to come forward. So many previously overlooked details in one’s life that in the busyness of time and to do’s we forget until the moment of grace comes to remind us of how loved we truly are. We are here to enjoy life and that means remembering the little details and acts of love expressed, given, and received by perfectly imperfect humans including ourselves.

When words don’t quite pull in the energy to generate a feeling of the moment I often turn to songs and share one of my favourites with you now, that feels to be a perfect fit – In the Stillness of the Moment by Karen Drucker.

Written in memory of grandma Reitzel, a beautiful guardian angel and companion in this journey of life.
